More Helpers of Operation Dignity

We couldn't have the impact we have without the many volunteers and organizations that help us out. From costume drives, food donations, clothing donations and assistance in the many unique and individual ways, we want to say thanks to you who help us out.

August 2005

Operation Dignity Salutes Jim Hourigan. He is a Pearl Harbor survivor, a member of many different veteran organizations and a major Individual supporter of Operation Dignity. Mr. Hourigan is a prime example of a veteran helping other veterans. He has been a partner of Operation Dignity since the very beginning of our inception to promote the health & safety of veterans. Over the years, he has provided crucial financial support that has allowed OD to serve over 4500 veterans yearly. Operation Dignity cherishes its community partners and friends like Mr. Hourigan and invites other veterans to ally with this effort and assure that no veteran is left behind.

Operation Dignity would like to thank the friends and family of Joseph Niec in the donations that are send to us in his memory.

Operation Dignity would like to thank the friends and family of Horace Kemp in the donations that are send to us in his memory.

Paul Russell from the Alameda Food Bank calls us routinely with donations of fresh vegetables and bread.

*Coffee donations from Pete's, Grocery's Outlet and Albertson.

September 2004

Boalt Hall Law Student's Intern Coordinator has contacted Operation Dignity.
Students will be coming in regularly to help Operation Dignity clients with any legal matters they may have beginning in September.

August 2004

We had a group of youths from YEP (Youth Employment Partnership) here this summer to learn job skills.   They have a 20 hour week with Operation Dignity and a weekly 3 hours training at 2300 International Blvd. We want to thank Maurisha, Jessica, Morgan, Courtney, Kelena, LaTina, Shadeema and Ayala for being such great help at the office and at HOD.

The Castro Valley Rotary  in Hayward, CA, has donated half a cow to Operation Dignity.

Patti Breitman came out to Dignity Commons to teach a class about nutrition and left some literature on the benefits of eating more vegetables without having to become a vegetarian on August 19th.  She made a yummy Chinese Noodle salad and passed out the recipe.  If you want to learn more, she recommends visiting The Center for Informed Food Choices.

Alex received 27 tickets for the A’s from an anonymous donor for the game on Sunday, August 29th at 1:05 PM. Thank you mystery helper!

May 2004

Easter was made very special for our kids with the help of several different groups. Deb and Bob Cilk again delivered many Easter baskets filled with candy and stuffed animals. These baskets were collected by several different groups in Pleasanton, including the Abbie 4-H of Pleasanton, Catholic Community of Pleasanton, the Service Class of Pleasanton Middle School, and Good News Bears of Livermore (for all the stuffed animals). Tamara Smith and the Jubilee Christian Center donated plenty of eggs for the Easter egg hunt, which the kids really enjoyed.

You may wonder how we manage to keep track of all of the wonderful donated items we have. Well, the answer is that sometimes it gets tough! But recently college and high school students from Service for Peace came out the warehouse and did a tremendous job cleaning up and helping us sort and organize everything.

March 2004

A special thank you to the World Commission of the First Presbyterian Church of Oakland who recently awarded us a grant.

December 2003:

Temple Sinai has long been a contributor to our success in many ways, including making many sandwiches over the years for us.

Produce for the People donates fresh produce two times a week to our food service program.

Oakland Potluck also continues to bring us lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.

In December, 200 fanny packs were stuffed with a greeting from a child, a new pair of gloves, hat, scarf, and folded rain gear. These will be distributed by our Mobile Outreach program. Thanks to Bill Ritchie from the East Bay Conservation Corp., Otis Taylor, and Mr. Raymond Carter for their help with this project.

New Volunteers. We also want to welcome our new volunteers, who just attended our orientation:

  • Raymond Carter
  • Elizbeth B. Judkins
  • Pamela Hoover
  • Rebecca Hoover
  • Mandy G. Leigh
  • Kurt A. Meyers

October 2003

Greg Lamboy. Greg is a local musician who has held benefit concerts, conducted food and clothing drives, handed out literature and donated money raised by selling his CD. His music is "Acoustic Pop with a Social Conscience."

Deb and Bob Cilk of Pleasanton have been helping out Operation Dignity for several years, getting the local schools involved in various clothing, blanket, coat, and food drives and various other activities. They have a special fondness for helping our kids. They have conducted costume drives at Halloween, Easter basket drives, Valentine's special deliveries, and gotten various other groups such as the Eagle Scouts to help us out. They've also brought school groups to tour the winter shelter.
